• You can prepare your slides in html with the free program slideshow (http://www.lecb.ncifcrf.gov/~toms/slideshow). If you do this you won't have to pay Bill anything and your slide show will last forever. For other methods you will have to pay and then lose your work when they "upgrade".
• Take the PC to the conference room in building 430. For the conference room in building 549 you will not need connection cables, they are supplied on the podium. The conference coordinator person to contact there is Susan Skidmore x5864.
• plug in power (back side, on left).
• plug in mouse (back side, on left).
• Unplug the data line of the pc nearby and connect it to the short converter cable.
• Connect the short converter cable to the Pavilion (left side, towards back).
• power on: press blue oval button on upper left hand side of the keyboard to boot up.
• The Pavilion has to pretend it is that the PC from which you stole the cable. It is probably set up properly, but just in case, the procedure to set it up is:
  • move mouse to lower left corner of screen
  • mouse into Settings
  • click on Start
  • click on Control Panel
  • double click on Network
  • click on TCP/IP -> FE574B-3Com 10/100 Lan PCCPWD-Fast Ethernet
  • click on IP Address window, it should be:
    • IP Address 129.43.50.149
    • submask 255.255.255.0
  • click on gateway, it should be
    • 129.43.50.1
  • click on DNS configuration, it should be:
    • Host fcjk3win (does not really matter)
    • DNS Server Search Order:
      • 129.43.100.100
      • 129.43.1.11
    • Domain Suffix Search Order:
      • ncifcrf.gov
• If you want to set up for another location, then you can do so using Network Neighborhood.
  • Right click on Network Neighborhood.
  • left click on properties
  • click on TCP/IP -> FE574B-3Com 10/100 Lan PCCPWD-Fast Ethernet
  • WARNING: write down the current IP address if you need it later; this method will destroy it!! (Yet another stupid feature).
  • under IP Addresses switch to "Obtain an IP address automatically"
  • click OK
  • click OK
  • The stupid thing will reboot (supposedly "unless windows 2000") and you will have the link.
  • The dataport to use in the board room in building 549 is on the left.
• Launch Netscape (double click on icon)
• Slide show:
  • go to your slide show web page or try this example.
  • Allow all images to load into the cache.
  • Launch blank screen by the popup method (the screen will be covered with a black netscape window) and then click a link to launch a smaller netscape for your slides.
  • Run through your slides once to make sure they display ok.
• Projector: Proxima Ultralight LX1
  • The connector to use is black, with a large flat surface and screws.
  • Plug the connector into the port "computer" and the other end to the computer.
  • connect Power cable.
  • adjust height.
  • focus is on the front I think.
• PictureTel: Open the cupboard, power on the television. Power on the PictureTel box. That's it!
• NetMeeting: To start the net meeting:
  • Launch NetMeeting (double click on icon)
  • Wait for them to call, or you can tell them you are ready:

  • Go through these steps:
    • click on Tools.
    • click on Sharing.
    • click on Desktop. THIS ONLY WORKS AFTER YOU HAVE A CONNECTION. It is a poor design! It FORCES you to wait for the connection before you can do the next step. DUMB! You have to wait for the people's names to appear.
    • click on Share.
    • Close the window
    • minimize the NetMeeting window
  • If the connection fails you may have to break (X button) the menu that shows up under Tools. Then launch that menu again. Then it will allow you to proceed if you have a connection. Another really dumb design!
  • Other programs:
    • Unix emulator: Click on Cygwin. pwd will show you are in /home/default. I put a pointer there to the desktop (using the standard ln -s TO FROM). So just 'cd desktop'. Then you can make directories, cd, vi, ls etc.
    • To FTP files onto the PC: It may be possible to do this with Cygwin, but it ftp reacts very badly to the long message before the login prompt and takes a user name but refuses to take a password. So instead click on Hummingbird Neighborhood. Set up a New FTP Profile. For security, I suggest only giving the machine name in the profile. Use the (obscure!) ">>" on the right side of the window to set to binary VERY IMPORTANT! Click on your profile to start the link. Then fight your way down the stupid GUI directory listing to the point above your directory. Then simply use the mouse to move the directory to the PC desktop. SORRY! It can't handle too many layers deep, so will refuse if you try. DUH!!
    • Launch Netscape: You can toss a directory into netscape and it will go to that directory. Since I use the system independent slideshow, this is all I need to get going.
  • SHUTDOWN
    • First TURN OFF ALL PROGRAMS. This stupid operating system will HANG if you don't! It hangs at the 'shutting down' screen for > 1 minute. If it hangs, you can remove the batteries (the long thing on the bottom). Power up and allow it to fix its disk. It will turn the screen off when it is down.
    • Move the mouse to lower left corner of screen, click on "Start". (Now is that logical or what?)
    • click on Shutdown. You will see this screen:
      
    • set Shutdown
    • click OK
    • the screen should show the "shutting down windows".
    • wait for screen to blank. (Sorry, you have to wait because it may fail and stay on, thereby killing the batteries!!)
    • If the screen does not blank within a second or two (but wait 15 seconds to be sure), you could try to power off, but I have found that that doesn't help. The darn machine won't turn off!! In this case, remove the power cord, turn the beast over and pull out the battery pack. Next to the pack (which is the long component on the bottom) there is a release lever to slide, and the battery pack will come out. That will fix the beast!! Put the battery pack back in. Power up. Wait 10 minutes (!) while it checks and corrects its file system. Do the shutdown procedure again. Good luck! While you are waiting, use another computer to read about Linux.
